Hungary already has an impressive reputation for hosting an array of cultural festivals, but with 2010 being officially declared ‘The Year of the Festival’ by the Hungarian National Tourist Office, this year promises to be something special. Along with the more well known festivals in Budapest, there will be special attention this year on the exciting variety of celebrations on offer in and around the city of Pécs, 2010’s European Capital of Culture.

There really is something for everyone this year in Hungary, with visitors being invited to join in an eclectic range of celebrations from classical music and contemporary art to spectacular battle re-enactments and Harley Davidson parades.

The town of Mohács, just a few miles outside Pécs, hosts a traditional Hungarian celebration from 18th – 23rd February 2010. The Busó Carnival gives visitors the opportunity to witness local folk arts and music, and celebrate a great historical event.  According to legend, the 17th Century residents of Mohács, known as ‘búsos’, dressed in hideous masks and animal pelts to scare away occupying Turkish forces, and now every year the locals dress like the ‘búsos’ to commemorate this day.  To find out more, visit www.hungarybudapestguide.com.

For visitors looking for a cultural celebration, the Budapest Spring Festival is a spectacle not to be missed.  Held from March 19th – April 5th 2010, the Spring Festival has grown into one of the major events on the European cultural calendar in the 30 years it has been running. Visitors can enjoy a spectacular array of entertainment including superb orchestral and jazz music, opera and dance performances, and contemporary art exhibitions.    Find out more about this fantastic event at www.festivalcity.hu.

Perhaps the most spectacular of Hungary’s festivals is the National Gallop, which celebrates the legendary Hussars, and takes place in the historic Heroes Square, in Budapest, from 2nd – 6th June 2010.  Over 100 horses and riders take part in races and impressive battle re-enactments, whilst visitors can watch and enjoy Hungarian music, dance performances and cuisine. Find out more at www.vagta.hu.

Proving that there really is something for everyone in Hungary in 2010, motorbike enthusiasts can head to the annual Harley Davidson Festival in Alsóörs, near Lake Balaton, from June 13th to 20th. Motorcycle fans go all out with an incredible procession of all kinds of Harley Davidson bikes, followed by stunt shows and arm wrestling. If you’re feeling competitive then there are contests in beer drinking, drumming and tug of war. Tribute bands appear on the stages and other highlights include goulash parties, fireworks and Harley Davidson fashion shows. To find out more visit www.hog.hu.

Every year hundreds of thousands of fans and visitors flock to Hungary to enjoy one of the several internationally renowned contemporary music festivals. The Volt Festival is held annually in the town of Sopron, and is regarded as one of the most exciting multi-cultural festivals in Europe. Taking place from June 30th – July 3rd 2010, the festival welcomes thousands of visitors from across the world, who come to enjoy nearly 200 top Hungarian and international acts performing across 15 stages. The Sziget Festival takes place from the August 9th – 15th 2010 and is one of Europe’s largest and most popular music festivals, welcoming over 400,000 people to Obudai Island, in the middle of the Danube River. The festival features some of the most popular artists in contemporary music across all genres, with 2009’s star studded line-up including Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, Bloc Party, The Ting Tings and Snow Patrol. Find out more at www.sziget.hu.

For those who enjoy treating their taste buds the annual Etyek Culinary Festival, held just outside Budapest in September, offers visitors a chance to discover the best local cuisine, whilst sampling a selection of wines from Hungary’s finest vineyards. The village of Etyek also hosts an annual festival dedicated solely to wine, in May. To find out more, visit www.pincefesztival.hu / www.kezes-labos.hu.

The Budapest International Wine and Champagne Festival, from September 8th – 12th 2010, is a fantastic opportunity for visitors the opportunity to learn about the history of Hungarian wine making and meet renowned wine makers, whilst enjoying traditional Hungarian music and gastronomic delights.  Find out more at www.budapestinfo.hu.

Round off the year in the style with a trip to the Budapest Christmas Festival, which runs from 20th November – 29th December 2010. Budapest is scattered with attractive Christmas fairs throughout the festive period, with the main one in Vorosmarty Square, where visitors can enjoy delicious hot wine, Hungarian pastries, traditional arts and crafts as well as music. The famous Gerbeaud building overlooks the square, and during this time its many windows turn into a giant advent calendar, one opening through each day of advent to reveal a Christmas image. Pécs gears up to be European Capital of Culture 2010

November 10, 2009 by Ian McKee

Pecs

The city of Pécs, situated two hours south of Budapest, is readying itself for the spotlight as it prepares to become the European Capital of Culture (EcoC) in 2010. Often described as a Hungarian city with a touch of the Mediterranean, the people of Pécs are anticipating an influx of tourists as a result of this new title. Pécs has been named the European Capital of Culture 2010 along with Istanbul and the Ruhr area in Germany.

Preparation and development for 2010

The city will kick off the celebrations with a packed calendar of cultural events in 2010 including: music concerts (rock, jazz, reggae, classical, folk and world music festivals); renaissance and contemporary art exhibitions; film screenings; literature festivals; religious events; plus theatre, opera, and dance performances.

The first major event is The Hungarian Culture Day on January 22nd which will mark the start of the activities for European Capital of Culture and will see all the city’s main cultural institutions host exhibitions and performances. Other event highlights throughout 2010 will include: A celebration of painter Ferenc Lantos’ 80th birthday in Pécs Gallery (February 19th – March 15th); Operalia, The World Opera Competition – an event founded by Plácido Domingo to find talented new opera singers (July 25th – August 1st); plus The Moveast International Film Festival where visitors can see the best Hungarian films of the year (October 6th – 13th).

In addition to planning a programme of diverse cultural events, Pécs is undergoing preparations to firmly establish the city as a cultural centre. Numerous parks and squares are in the process of being refurbished in advance of 2010. There is a revival of the city’s public spaces and parks where several outdoor events will be hosted next year, giving them a new community and cultural function.

Szolnay Cultural Quarter

The Zsolnay Porcelain Factory of Pécs will also be reconstructed. This will be the largest redevelopment project ever executed on a historic building in Central and Eastern Europe. The result will offer a new and attractive highlight to boost the tourist market in the cultural-art quarter. The Szolnay Cultural Quarter is a new cultural and artistic area which is being established on a 41 thousand square metre space in the Szolnay factory’s premises. This area will host events for some 200 thousand visitors every year. Pécs has a wealth of talented musical performers but, until now, the city has had no large scale performance space. The Pécs Conference and Concert Centre is being built on the eastern boundary of the city centre. This will include a large concert hall and rehearsal space and will become the home of the renowned Pannon Philarmonic orchestra.

Museums

The majority of museums are situated on Káptalan Utca – Museum Street – and as part of the ECoC preparation huge redevelopments are taking place there. A grand new exhibition space is being constructed, which will be the first museum in Hungary with georthermic energy utilisation, which (aside from electricity) will make the building energy self sufficient.

Access to the city

In addition to the arts and cultural sectors, developments are taking place across the city and the surrounding region in the run up to January 2010 to improve infrastructure. A motorway is currently being built between Budapest and Pécs, making access to the city easier for visitors.More information on Pécs, the European Capital of Culture 2010, can be found on pecs2010.hu

Notes to Editors:

  • The European Capital of Culture for 2010 was conceived as a means of bringing citizens of the European Union closer together, the European City of Culture programme was launched in 1985 by the Council of Ministers on the initiative of Greek Minister of Culture Melina Mercouri. Since then, the initiative has been more and more successful amongst European citizens and has had a growing cultural and socio-economic impact. The ECoC title provides development possibilities not only for the city itself but for the entire South Transdanubian region.
  • Culture – The city of Pécs has produced a number of significant cultural figures, including Renaissance poet Janos Pannonius, modernist architect Marcel Breuer, painter and one of the earliest  creators of Op-Art Victor Vasarely, sculptor János Horvay and the Szolnay family who founded the famous Szolnay Porcelain factory in Pécs. The city was also the birth place for Hungary’s  president, László Sólyom, who attended the University of Pécs. Pécs has long been the museum centre of Hungary outside of Budapest, with exhibitions showcasing everything from local to internationally known art from periods stretching from Renaissance to the contemporary.
  • The Borderless City – Pécs is known as ‘the borderless city’ as it has long been a frontier for different cultures and regions. In its earliest incarnation as the Roman town of Sopianae (still an area of the city and designated UNESCO World Heritage site today) it was positioned on the border between the Roman Empire and territory of the Barbarians. In its long history the city (or parts of the city), has been Roman, Turkish and German. Today it is considered the gateway to the Balkans, as it lies on the south-eastern border of the European Union.
  • The unique character and atmosphere of Pécs is largely determined by the fact that it is a university city. Thanks to the more than thirty five thousand national and international students of the University of Pécs, the youthful energy of the city and busy street life, can be sensed on simple weekdays and during large-scale festivals such as the International Culture Week in Pécs, which takes place early July every year, attracting all those interested in culture from all over the globe.
  • The colourful festivals and other events are hosted by the historic sites and buildings of the city. The early Roman burial chambers, the medieval buildings, the different sites of religious history, the streets paved with several thousand year-old stones all radiate a unique atmosphere. The spirit of modern art saturates Pécs. New works of art and performances are constantly being created, inspired by the atmosphere of the city, whose unique nature lies right in the interaction between the city and art. The local city centre with its early Christian remains from the Roman years was made a World Heritage Site in 2000 by UNESCO.
  • In the past Pécs developed cultural layers of Latin, Turkish, German, Croatian and Hungarian origin. Today the city is an important centre of German, Croatian and Romany culture. There are nine local minority governments operating in the city. Pécs and its immediate region have witnessed extensive contacts between the cultures of Western Europe and the Balkans, Germany and Turkey, regions which do not generally maintain close cultural relations. A short walk in the downtown area reveals a multitude of coexisting cultural and historical zones. The peaceful coexistence of cultures is vividly symbolised by the Turkish crescent and the Catholic cross on the dome of the Turkish mosque on main square.
