(28th June 2010) Fancy putting the foot to the floor and the pedal to the metal? Where better to take a road trip than down the first official route of America? Route 1 spans the entire length of New England and takes in five out of the region’s six states along the way. Travelling right from the craggy coast of Maine to the sunny enclaves of Rhode Island and beyond — there is never a dull moment when taking in all that Route 1 has to offer.

New England is a great compact driving destination, with long, windy roads as far as the eye can see, stretching right along New England’s beautiful coastline and most major attractions within just a few hours drive from the hub of Boston. With so many great stop-offs along the way, the Route 1 road-trip may never end!

Gaze in wonder, in magical Maine

Just off the beaten track lies the wondrous Wiscasset, a quiet 18th Century village along New England’s Route One and home to the ‘Musical Wonder House’. Quintessentially quirky, the internationally famous Musical Wonder House is “the showplace for mechanical musical instruments”. Undoubtedly one of America’s most unique museums, this musical treat features over 5,000 restored musical boxes, in every possible variation, from player grand pianos and organs to spring-powered phonographs, musical birds, porcelains, furniture, clocks and even a musical painting! All of these are lovingly restored, demonstrated and displayed in what was once a sea captain’s mansion and dates back to the 1800’s. With such an unusual and awe-inspiring musical collection, it is one not to be missed. And for lunch or dinner, head over to Red’s Eats for one of their famous lobster rolls brimming with fresh lobster or delicious friend clams.

Where Everybody Knows Your Name!

Why not stop for a break in Boston and grab a beer at the original Cheers bar? Right in the heart of Boston, the Bull & Finch Pub is the watering hole made famous by the hit television series Cheers. The programme’s popularity has made it a must-see for visitors to the city. Rustle up some energy to stretch your legs and explore the capitol of Massachusetts. Take the famous Freedom Trail from Boston Common, a 2.5 mile red-brick trail guiding you through three hundred and fifty years of American history. For a historical overview of one of the oldest cities in the USA, hop on one of Boston’s famous Duck Tours, which provide an insight into Boston’s neighbourhoods and are highlighted with a cruise on the picturesque Charles River. Driving south again on Route 1, be sure to take a detour to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. Be transported back to the 1960s and experience the life and legacy of President Kennedy’s 1000 days in office.

Summer festival fun, Rhode Island:

WaterFire is an exceptional, multi-sensory art event that has revitalised Providence, Rhode Island’s capital city. Taking place on weekend evenings throughout the summer and set in the city’s Waterplace Park, WaterFire consists of a series of up to 100 bonfires that blaze just above the surface of the three rivers that pass through the middle of downtown Providence. Glide along on a Gondola and experience this inspired piece of contemporary art. Created by the artist Barnaby Evans, the installation is accompanied by music from all over the world and has attracted over ten million visitors since its inception in 1994.

May 25, 2010 – With more than three quarters of Brits planning to holiday in the UK this summer, why not escape the crowds and enjoy a staycation with a difference in sunny “New England”, where summer won’t be a washout?

There are many towns and cities in New England that bear the names of popular UK holiday destinations, all of which make great holiday spots in their own right, offering beautiful architecture, fascinating history, and a number of fun activities for families.

Bath, Maine

Originally a city devoted to the shipbuilding industry, the city of Bath in Maine has flourished into an area with a vibrant arts scene, inspired by the miles of coastline on which it is located. Bath sits on the Kennebec River and neighbouring Brunswick overlooks the beautiful Casco Bay. If fishing takes your fancy, or perhaps a spot of canoeing or kayaking, then the surrounding rivers, bays and even the ocean offer all of the above. For history buffs, take the short drive to Popham Beach, home of the Popham Colony site, where English settlers looking to form the first colony of the northeast coast arrived in 1607. Enjoy a tour of the historic Popham Fort or simply enjoy basking in the sun.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Portsmouth in New Hampshire is a dynamic city at the mouth of the Piscataqua River. Steeped in history and running alongside the river, Portsmouth offers something for all to enjoy. Dating back to 1623, Portsmouth is America’s third-oldest city and still retains much of its colonial charm. The city’s living history museum “Strawbery Banke” depicts everyday life in Portsmouth over the last three centuries with costumed actors portraying former inhabitants of the many historic homes you can tour. Many of the city’s top landmarks can be seen by walking the picturesque Portsmouth Harbor Trail which is available as a self or guided tour. Aside from its history and culture, Portsmouth is the perfect place to pick up unique souvenirs from its many boutiques and to enjoy people-watching at a sidewalk café in the town’s charming Market Square. This city is one of the region’s top foodie destinations, boasting more restaurants per capita than anywhere else in the USA.

Newport, Rhode Island

Newport, Rhode Island, much like its Welsh counterpart, is a bustling seaport and offers an excellent alternative to the nearby cities of New York or Boston. Have a browse around one of its renowned historic ocean-front mansions such as The Breakers, which was built by the Vanderbilts during America’s Guilded Age, or the heiress Doris Duke’s famous Rough Point estate. Another way to explore the spectacular mansions that line Newport’s Bellevue Avenue is to take a hike along the seven-mile Cliff Walk. The harbour front, which is magnificently lined with yachts, cruise-liners and sailboats, is the ideal spot to sample a Rhode Island ‘Stuffie’ or clam cake as they are also known and chase it down with a frozen lemonade, a local tradition. For those wishing to soak up the sun, head to Gooseberry beach, just one of Newport’s stunning sandy beaches.

Other “staycation” options in New England include visits to Manchester, Vermont, for some designer outlet shopping; Gloucester, Massachusetts, home to Captain Birdseye and site of the film The Perfect Storm; and also Bristol, Rhode Island, which has the largest Independence Day parades in the USA and where the central road marking is triple striped in red, white and blue for the occasion

Wondering how to keep them amused this summer?

May 11, 2010 – Ever dreamed of being a lighthouse keeper? New England’s iconic landmark lighthouses offer a unique way to keep the kids amused this summer, with hands-on experiential packages where parents and children alike can learn the tricks and trade of a lighthouse keeper. There are some great choices across the entire New England region of the USA, offering stunning coastal scenery and learning experiences. Here is a selection:

Maine: The Lighthouse State

Maine is known as America’s ‘Lighthouse State’ for good reason. There are over 60 lighthouses dotted along its dramatic coastline – each with its own unique features and history. More than 30 Maine lighthouses allow visitation of their grounds or public access inside some of their buildings – providing fascinating glimpses into Maine’s maritime heritage.

To experience the life of a lighthouse keeper, the Burnt Island Living Lighthouse tour in the popular Boothbay Harbor region of Maine is a great family activity. The light station’s beautifully restored buildings serve as a “living history museum” in which interpreters in period clothing portray a lighthouse family who once called Burnt Island home. Also in Maine, windjammer cruises provide visitors with a spectacular way to see lighthouses along the craggy coastline from the deck of a National Historic Landmark. You may also take in some fabulous wildlife such as puffins, bald eagles and sea lions. Maine offers an extensive website with information on the different lighthouses to explore:

www.visitmaine.com

Island life not as you know it!

Rose Island Lighthouse, located in Newport, Rhode Island, offers the perfect opportunity for wholesome family fun in the fantastic surrounds of a lighthouse. For a week, families can stay in and operate an active lighthouse steeped in history.

As the lighthouse keeper, they will be responsible for charting the tides and ensuring the day to day running of the lighthouse. The Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation has been up and running for the last ten years, and they love people to become part of the history of this very special island lighthouse.

www.roseislandlighthouse.org

Lighthouse with longitude!

Go out on a limb and head to Race Point Light Station for a more intrepid lighthouse keeping experience. Right on the tip of the Cape Cod peninsula, not far from colourful and lively Provincetown, Massachusetts, Race Point can be reached only by whizzing along the two mile stretch of sand dunes.

The whole family can take a dune buggy tour and explore the spectacular and highly unique terrain of the tip of the Cape, before taking up post at the lighthouse. Race Point Light Station is the ultimate example of volunteerism at its best with no input from anyone but the countless individuals who lend a hand. Children enjoy watching many species of birds and waterfowl fly by whilst adults kick back and enjoy their room with a view!

www.racepointlighthouse.net

Whilst in New England, history buffs can brush up on their British-American history in our coastal city’s namesake – Portsmouth – in the state of New Hampshire. Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse was the first light station established by the British military and the first lighthouse in the American colonies north of Boston!

www.portsmouthharborlighthouse.org

Even those travellers who want to head inland into the mountains of New England will find lighthouses. In the state of Vermont, travellers can tour the Colchester Reef lighthouse – just one of the many unique exhibits at the fascinating Shelburne Museum, a collection of art and Americana set amidst beautiful gardens overlooking Lake Champlain.

If you’re looking for somewhere different to celebrate St Patrick’s Day this year then New England is the perfect destination for an unforgettable Spring break. Just a short hop across the Atlantic (six hours flying time), New England is ideal for both short breaks and longer trips, and with its rich Irish heritage, the region plays host to some of the largest St Patrick’s Day celebrations outside Dublin.

Throughout the 19th and 20th Centuries Irish men and women sailed across the Atlantic to pursue their dreams of economic prosperity and religious freedom in the great ‘New World. ‘Today, more than 11% of America’s population is believed to have Irish ancestry and the Irish culture and heritage in the region remains the strongest in America An incredible 29 out of the 44 US Presidents are believed to have Irish heritage of varying degrees — dating all the way from George Washington to current President Barack Obama, whose Kansas-born mother is of Irish and English descent.

The city of Boston, in Massachusetts, is the birth place of the US St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, hosting the first ever event in 1737, and today is home to one of the largest parades in the country, which attracts over half a million visitors to the city. The parade, which takes place on March 14th 2010, begins in the traditionally Irish neighbourhood of South Boston and continues through the heart of the city, entertaining spectators on the way with an array of traditional Irish dancers, marching bands and pipe musicians. Elsewhere in the city, visitors can engage in more Irish history and heritage at the Irish Film Festival, take a trip to the Irish Cultural Centre Open House, or visit the JFK Presidential Library and Museum and celebrate the most famous Irish-American of all, the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy.

No St Patrick’s Day celebration would be complete without a pint of Guinness or two in a traditional Irish Pub. New England boasts its fair share of lively Irish bars in great holiday destinations, including: The Kinsdale and Black Rose in Boston; The Shannon Door in Jackson, New Hampshire; Patrick’s Pub in Providence, Rhode Island; McGrath’s Irish Pub in Killington, Vermont; and Ri Ra Irish Pub in the coastal city of Portland, Maine.

As well as providing an evocative backdrop for the St Patrick’s Day Celebrations, New England’s vibrant towns and cities offer great shopping opportunities for those hoping to take advantage of the favorable exchange rates on designer clothing, cosmetics and electrical goods.

Holidaymakers wishing to explore the region a little further will benefit from the bright skies and crisp cool March air, which provides ideal conditions for winter pursuits such as skiing, snowboarding, zip-lining and snowmobiling. Hit the slopes at Mad River Glen, Vermont, on St Patrick’s Day, dressed from head to toe in green, to ski all day for just $17 (approximately £11). And don’t forget – St Patrick’s Day coincides perfectly with the New England Maple Syrup season, allowing visitors to indulge their taste buds with the sweet taste of New England.

The New England region of the USA offers a wealth of natural culinary delights from fresh lobsters, clams and scallops to wild blueberries, cranberries and pumpkins. However, for those with a sweet tooth, there is no better time to visit than during March and April for New England’s “Maple Sugaring Season”.

The North Eastern corner of the United States is one of the few places in the world with an ideal climate for the growth of sugar maple trees which yield sweet maple syrup. In cold climate areas, these trees store sugar in their roots before the winter and the sap, which rises in the spring, can be tapped and concentrated. The New England state of Vermont is the largest producer of maple syrup in the USA, generating over four million litres per season, while Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island are collectively the second largest. For visitors, maple syrup is often a morning delicacy served over pancakes, waffles and French toast in New England’s cosy bed and breakfast inns.

Dotted throughout New England are many traditional “sugar shacks” – wooden huts with louvered tin roofs to vent steam as the sap is boiled down to syrup (it takes approximately 40 litres of sap to get one litre of syrup!). Visitors can smell the sweet scent from miles away.

Spring travellers to New England states can visit these sugar shacks during open house days to see the maple sugaring process up close, sample the many different varieties of maple syrup, and delight in the mouth watering New England institution “sugar on snow”.

“Sugar on snow” is made by pouring hot maple syrup onto cones of fresh snow. As the maple syrup quickly cools, it turns into chewy toffee-like sweet that is simply delicious. Other maple syrup treats include pure maple sugar, maple toffee, maple cream and maple fudge. Although the maple season usually finishes in April, many “sugar shacks” remain open throughout the year to visitors wishing to purchase pure maple products.

A dedicated maple sugaring visitor map, which contains the location of all sugar shacks and their opening times, has been developed by the state of Vermont. The map also provides details of the annual Vermont Maple Festival which takes place in St Albans from April 30 to May 02 2010.
