New Mexico

New Mexico, otherwise known as the “Land of Enchantment”, is rich in history and culture, and boasts a wonderful landscape. In its renowned museums, visitors can discover anything from the ancient culture of the Native Americans, to the more recent mysterious extra-terrestrial phenomena surrounding the Roswell incident (and soon real travel to the space will be available with the arrival of the Virgin Galactic spaceport).

With deserts, lakes, mountains and forests, discerning travelers have the opportunity to discover: the footprints of giant dinosaurs; the ruins of ancient Indian villages; the high Rocky Mountain ranges of the north; the Chihuahuan Desert in the south; the Great Plains in the east; amazing canyons in the west; and the Rio Grande River which cuts through the centre. History is visible everywhere in this wonderful state, which is seen particularly in the rich diversity of Native American culture and Hispanic influences.

2009 marks the start of two years of celebrations to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Santa Fe, New Mexico’s capital city and one of America’s most historic and vibrant cities.

But it’s not all about history – New Mexico is very much a part of the future. On December 31, 2008, a 20-year lease agreement was reached between the State of New Mexico and Virgin Galactic. Virgin Galactic’s world headquarters will be established in New Mexico and its operations will be located at New Mexico’s Spaceport America, the nation’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport. Take a look at this video, which features some of the first likely arrivals.

New Mexico will be celebrating its centennial in 2012, and has just unveiled a logo for the celebrations. Do you think it’s better than a certain other logo associated with 2012?
