Following the earthquake which struck off the coast of Japan in March 2011, tourism has sharply dropped to the destination with visitor figures from April 2011 reporting that tourism numbers fell by over 60% compared to the year before.
Tokyo, the capital, has returned to normal with international events such as Tokyo Fashion Week and the Tokyo International Film Festival carrying on as scheduled. Construction on the Tokyo Sky Tree (tallest broadcast tower in the world) is also currently taking place and is due to be completed by May 2012.
In August 2011, Tokyo CVB was keen to entice tourists back and appointed McCluskey International to represent the city and increase awareness in the UK market as well as help boost tourism figures. This will be carried out through various press trips to the capital, which will further highlight the developments currently taking place around the city and the attractions, events and hotels available for the UK tourist.
