Follow Billy Connolly to the Heart of Route 66 - Springfield, Illinois

ITV's four-part series started last night showing Billy Connolly take his motor-trike along all 2,488 miles of the world's most famous American highway, Route 66. Billy's journey takes us through the heart of Illinois Route 66 and to the town of Springfield where some of America's favourite Route 66 icons sit. Road trippers can follow in his tracks to Springfield this year with a special four-night package from £760 per person.

Visit the top three Illinois Route 66 Icons:

  • Shea's Gas Station Museum, which offers over half a century of gas station memorabilia. Owner Bill Shea will share his stories about his collection and his life over 50 years alongside Route 66.
  • The Cozy Drive In is a traditional Route 66 diner, which has become a part of the history of the Road and the history of Springfield. Inventor Ed Waldmire introduced the Cozy Dog - a famous "hot dog on a stick" in 1946 and the Waldmire family still make the delicacy daily.
  • Route 66 Twin Drive In Theatre, which is one of the few remaining drive in movie theatres where you and your family can enjoy an evening of movies under the stars.

Known as Classic America, Springfield was also home to one of America's most historic figures, Abraham Lincoln. Learn more about the ex-president and see the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library, the Lincoln Home and Neighbourhood, Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices, Lincoln Tomb, Lincoln's New Salem, and more.
